Why switch to a bamboo toothbrush?
Posted by DEBBIE PLUMRIDGE
Did you know that 99% of all toothbrushes are made from plastic? And every year globally, we bin over 3.5 billion plastic toothbrushes. These end up in landfill or the ocean, polluting the planet and posing a risk to marine life.
Why bamboo?
Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on Earth. It's been recorded that the Chinese moso bamboo can grow almost a metre in a day. Bamboo grows in dense forests where little light reaches the ground and there is strong evolutionary pressure to reach the sunlight.
It’s good for our environment
Made from natural bamboo wood, the handle is 100% biodegradable. It may be safely composted or sent to landfill. Even with non-compostable bristles, these eco-friendly toothbrushes still eliminate 90% of the plastic used in traditional toothbrush production.
“Bamboo toothbrush handles can take around six months to compost, while a plastic one takes hundreds of years to fully break down,” Emma Priestland, plastic-free campaigner at Friends Of The Earth
Bamboo toothbrushes also have a lower carbon footprint, as no oil has been extracted to make the body of the brush.
It’s effective and straightforward to use
In most cases, the bristles are made of soft nylon that provides maximum performance to get rid of stains, tartar and plaque from sensitive teeth and gums. Bamboo toothbrushes are as effective at cleaning your teeth as any plastic manual toothbrush.
A natural bamboo toothbrush will last as long as any plastic toothbrush. It’s suggested you dry the toothbrush before storing. Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every two to three months or when the bristles have frayed out of shape.
Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is a simple step in the journey to reduce single use plastic and living zero waste. See our range of bamboo toothbrushes that will look amazing in your bathroom!
